The bus stop
(…) It has a panoramic format which underlines the participation of many anonymous people of various age and status waiting for the arrival of a public transport and occupying the entire width of the painting. There are no close-ups. The work is symmetrical and therefore assumes a monumental aspect. The image seems crystallized in its appearance and becomes a symbol of the human condition. From afar the colors are compact and La Fermata is an example of the global urban landscape found in any city in the world. (…) The bodies always have a certain universal character, and in this way they correspond in part to the body of the person who looks at them, plunging the spectator into the space of representation. In Fermata the placement of this physicality in front of the viewer, on a lifesize scale, encourages spontaneous and superficial identification, something like what happened in the great cycles of frescos, when the image was word and governed norm, and not unlike the manner in which the masses subjugated to any totalitarianism, even the soft and democratic ones, enjoy seeing their reflection in their own representation, as Walter Benjamin reminds us.
